Meningitis Trust

The Meningitis Trust is the oldest and largest meningitis charity in the world. It is the only support-focused organisation for people who have been, and continue to be, affected by meningitis in the UK. For over 25 years the charity has developed its free support services and now reaches around 20,000 people each year; through services such as a 24-hour nurse-led helpline, counselling, art, play or music therapy, one-to-one contacts and it awards over £200,000 worth of financial grants each year. Its commitment is clear – to make sure that no-one affected by meningitis is left to suffer in silence, ensuring that everyone gets support for life.

Most people survive meningitis, but thousands are left with debilitating after-effects. The Meningitis Trust aims to support every individual touched by meningitis; providing a lifeline to help them, and their loved ones, rebuild their lives following the devastation of the disease. The charity also raises life saving awareness of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and associated septicaemia.

The Trust’s Vision is for all communities to be aware of the threat and impact of meningitis and for anyone affected to have access to quality care and support for as long as they need it.

Our Mission is to reduce the devastating impact of meningitis by:

  • Raising awareness of the disease with health professionals and the general public
  • Providing the professional services and support to everyone affected for as long as they need it
  • Continuing to be the leading authority on the after-effects and aftercare of meningitis

“We have come a long way and routine vaccination of children has led to a significant reduction in vaccine-type pneumococcal disease, but the fight is by no means over. Our mission is to reduce the devastating impact of meningitis and we hope that by coming together for this working group, we will be another step towards achieving our goals to reduce the suffering and disability inflicted by this terrible disease.” Sue Davie, Chief Executive, Meningitis Trust.
